Since 1992, organizations around the world, including ZiZZO Bikes, have used the month of June to raise awareness about healthcare for men and boys to practice and implement healthy life choices. The blue ribbon is used as the symbol to heighten awareness of preventable problems like heart disease and prostate cancer to name just a few. So, let’s change things up guys and get on track with some better, healthier decisions.
THE HEALTHY DOMINO EFFECT
I can’t think of anything better to get back into being healthy than cycling! Let me share with you what I call the “healthy domino effect.”
After my bicycle racing days were over, I went from 145 lbs. to 275 lbs. in just under 20 years. I really didn’t think too much about it in my late 20s or 30s.
Pizza and beer, donuts, junk food, soda, etc., was part of the regular diet. My old racing bike sat collecting dust as I moved into the SIZE 3XL T-Shirt and 48-inch waist area. All those years went by and I didn’t care about cycling until I went to Maui and saw Mt. Haleakala. I thought I would love to ride this mountain up to the top. That’s 36 miles uphill 0-10k feet!
I dusted off the old bike and got to work! Pure inspiration! To meet the challenge, I would have to drop a bunch of weight in a healthy way.
Seven (7) months later I was standing on top of that mountain! After doing that I thought about how much better I felt in all aspects of life and how riding changed my eating habits for the better. I wasn’t planning on any “domino effect” but that initial inspiration set the course in motion.

So maybe it’s been a while since you have ridden and you are thinking about getting a bike. You head to the bike shop and see some pretty crazy price tags that is out of your budget.

It may start out as a few miles but the good vibes you feel after that ride will keep you wanting more. You may get into a small routine and find that certain foods and drinks help you go a bit further and feel better. Now you're planning some meals with riding your ZiZZO in mind. There may be some trial and error but motivation is building. Who knows, maybe you start considering some accessories or even wearing a pair of comfortable cycling shorts or liners?
Before you know it, the weight is falling off and you have replaced prepackaged microwave meals with healthy homemade dinners. Maybe now you have cut the soda out and replaced it with good old water or a very healthy smoothie! Next thing you know you’re at the grocery store rethinking your purchases and looking at labels a bit more often.
Let’s not forget the mental health boost riding a ZiZZO gives you. I personally started commuting on my ZiZZO along a creek trail that takes me to our headquarters in Union City, California. I feel so much more at peace and ready to start my day after an 8-mile spin. No more sitting in traffic getting agitated.
Hopefully you can see that positive domino effect riding a ZIZZO can have. Just get out and ride and have fun and it can lead to a new healthier you if you let it. As far as our better halves/ significant others: please continue to “remind us” to get those tests done. Sometimes we need a little extra help or nudge in the right direction.
Just remember guys they are not “nagging us” to get that checkup, they just care about us. Stay healthy everyone and ride that ZiZZO to the path of wellness!
