Detecting and Troubleshooting Spooky Noises

Are you hearing weird noises? Are you scared to apply your brakes because they scream like a banshee? In this first blog of what some call the “Spooky Month” let’s try and solve some of these mysteries. Whether it’s a creak or a squeak these sounds can indicate underlying issues that need addressing. Here are some of the most common bicycle noises and how to fix them. 

Squeaky Brakes 

Causes- Dirt or debris on the brake pads, misalignment, or worn-out pads.  

Fix- Clean the brake pads and rims with rubbing alcohol. Ensure brake pads are aligned properly with the rim. Replace worn-out pads if needed. Click here for brake pad alignment video 

Creaking Stem- Since a ZiZZO folds and adjusts to various heights and positions there are parts that may come out of adjustment at times. Depending on what stem you may have you could just be an allen wrench away from getting rid of that noise. Our head tech Tony made a few easy-to-follow videos For the Ferro click HERE. Consider cleaning or inspecting adjustable parts for grime/rust. 

Creaking Crankset 

Causes- Loose components, dry bearings, or worn-out parts.  

Fixes- Tighten the crank bolts and check for any play in the crank arms. - Lubricate the bottom bracket and inspect for wear. - If creaking persists, consider replacing the bottom bracket. 

Clicking Chain 

Causes-Dirt buildup, poor lubrication, or a damaged chain.  

Fixes- Clean and lubricate the chain thoroughly. - Check for stiff links; replace the chain if it's excessively worn or damaged. - Inspect the cassette and derailleur for compatibility. 

Rattling Handlebars 

Causes-Loose headset, improperly secured components, or a loose stem. 

 Fixes - Tighten the stem bolts and check headset adjustment. - Ensure all accessories (like lights or bells) are securely attached. - If the headset feels loose, adjust or replace it as necessary.  

Popping Noise from Wheel 

Causes- Loose spokes or issues with the freehub.  

Fixes- Check spoke tension; tighten any loose spokes. - Inspect the freehub for wear; clean and lubricate if necessary. - If the noise continues, a trip to a bike shop for a hub overhaul may be needed. 

Thumping Sound While Riding 

Causes-Tire issues, wheel misalignment, or damaged pedal. Once in a great while that “thump” can be felt and it could be a bottom bracket issue. A shop should diagnose this.  

Fix- Inspect tires for punctures or damage; replace if necessary. - Ensure wheels are true; if they wobble, take to a bike shop and let the pros take a look. 

Mysterious Clicking (personal experience)

This one may drive you crazy because it is one of the last things you would think about when hearing a weird click. If your bike was in the rain and not properly dried sometimes where the spokes crisscross there can be a little tiny bit of rust that builds up and causes an odd click at a certain part of rotation. The easiest fix is to put a drop of oil at the spot of the two spokes rubbing against each other and see if the sound disappears. 

Noises are not to be ignored. Like the engine light on your car, it is telling you something may be off. Keep your bike clean to prevent dirt buildup, which can cause many noises. Regularly lubricate moving parts like the chain, cables, and pivot points. Conduct regular checks on all components, ensuring everything is tight and in good condition.
