January is “National Hobby Month” according to the National Day Calendar. I don’t know about you but when I think about a hobby my brain goes to model trains, photography, and painting. So, it brings up a great question is riding your ZIZZO more of a hobby or a lifestyle?
The dictionary defines hobby as a regular activity that is done for enjoyment, typically during one’s leisure time. So, when does that hobby become a lifestyle? Are you riding your ZiZZO at times that are NOT during leisure time? Maybe you use it as your form of transportation to perform certain tasks or ride to work. How do you feel when you can’t get out on a ride for any reason such as the weather, illness, or mechanical issues? Does your mood and demeanor change because the bike was missing from your daily life? These are all questions to ask yourself when trying to figure out if it has become more than a hobby.
A hobby can provide a nice mental break from the everyday grind and spark passion that makes one feel motivated and excited about life in general. It is a great way to de-stress after a long commute or rough day at work. I know that a hobby is something that I can do randomly and always come back to later if I take an extended break. On the other hand, riding my ZiZZO is something I look forward to daily. If someone said I can’t do photography anymore; I think I could get by. If someone said you can’t go out for a ride anymore then we may have a problem.
I know I rely on that 1st cup of coffee to get motivated in the morning but I think the anticipation of pedaling away at some point that day or that week might be just as motivating. Looking outside from my office and seeing the start of a nice sunny day my first thought is “I wish I was riding”. I do a quick search on my phone to see if the rest of the week is going to be as nice and start planning my adventures in my head for an upcoming day. I do a mental checklist regarding my weekend obligations and then think about the route. Should I fold up the ZIZZO Forte and put it in the trunk to seek out a new adventure on a trail or just ride to my old trusty paths near home? Do I need to think about food stops or bringing extra water bottles if I plan a longer journey? My ZIZZO trunk bags are already attached to the rack waiting to be filled with extra clothing, snacks, supplies, and maybe even my camera. The more I think about it riding bikes for me is a lifestyle that has led to friendship, fitness, and fun.
We all know the benefits of riding when it comes to both physical and mental health. Whether you call riding your ZiZZO a hobby or a lifestyle it really doesn’t matter as long as you ride. Happy pedaling and enjoy the ride.
