Do we really need a week or day for “Random Acts of Kindness”? Maybe not, but it is a great reminder that when we see a chance to help out, (in even a small way), that we do so if we can. Maybe it's something simple like opening a door for somebody, or picking up something they dropped. Sure, you can go a little further and pay for the person’s coffee in line at the drive-through or maybe at a fast-food joint. But when riding on your ZiZZO there are a bunch of cycling things we can do to help each other out in some small way or another.
FOOD & WATER PATROL FOR THE WEARY RIDER
Sometimes we head out on our ride and we find ourselves needing some nourishment. With the ZiZZO it’s a hassle-free experience to fold it up and take it in. Leaving it outside even for a minute can be a good way to say “Bye-Bye” to your bike because according to bicycle.com a bike is stolen every 30 seconds in North America. That’s 2 million bikes a year! One way to help another rider, especially if they don’t have a ZiZZO to take inside is to offer to watch their bike as they go into a convenience store looking for some food or drinks. The feeling of security you are providing them with is so priceless. I’ve been there myself. After offering to watch one guy's bike he returned the favor and watched mine at a gas station. It was a nice feeling to be taking my time looking for that right sports drink amongst a whole cooler without being scared my bike would get ripped off. It’s the little things.
HELPING HAND
It never fails; when I’m out on a ride on my ZiZZO and I’m cruising along a path or in the country, I always come across that saddening sight of someone fixing a flat on the side of the road. I always carry in my ZiZZO trunk bag a spare tube, tire levers, and a patch kit. If I don’t have my ZiZZO Mini Electric Air Pump I carry a small handpump. Obviously my ZiZZO inner tube might not be the right size for the person with a flat if they have a different size wheel but when riding by, I will slow down and say, “Are you O.k... need anything?” Most the time they say, “I’m good. Thanks,” and I keep rolling by. One time out on a long ride I had a cable snap on my rear derailleur and luckily a cyclist stopped for me. He had some multitools and did what he could. He took a few links out of my chain and made one gear able to use- just what I needed to limp home 10 miles. Of course, if that had happened on a ZiZZO, I would’ve pulled out my phone, called an Uber, pop the bike in the it’s trunk, and had them drive me home comfortably. But getting some roadside help with a little “Random Acts of Kindness” is really appreciated too!
A SIMPLE HELLO
Maybe this just seems silly but as another rider approaches, it's not that hard to give them a nod or a small lifting of your hand as a wave to say, “Hi.” No matter what kind of bike they are riding, it's just a friendly gesture to acknowledge them. Maybe they won’t wave back, but that’s ok, you did and maybe next time they will too! If you can’t wave due to some sort of safety reason, then no worries just try when you can.
KEEPING THE ROAD CLEAR
Not every Random Act of Kindness has to be noticed by another person to count. If you are out on a ride and see a lone, plastic water bottle lying on the ground and feel like picking it up and throwing it into a recycling bin that counts too! Don’t forget to pack in and pack out with any food wrappers you may have as well. Maybe you are out on a ride in the country and notice a large rock randomly placed in the middle of the road. Make sure the coast is clear, and kick it to the side so nobody hits it. If there is a large animal that got hit and is lying in the road, maybe pull over and call animal control to notify them. There are so many things we all can do that can make the riding experience on our ZIZZOs even better. What are some Random Acts of Kindness you have done or have been the recipient of?
LET'S BE COURTEOUS
With so many people sharing the same walking/bike paths it can get a little edgy unless we use some courtesy. When approaching others that have their backs to you, I like to slow down and say, “Coming up behind you,” or if they give me a clear spot on the left, I will give them some distance and call out, “On your left” about 20-30 feet before I get to them. I also will use my ZiZZO bike buzzer to tell them I'm on my way. It lets them decide where they are going to go and then you can navigate. Don’t always assume they will all walk to the correct side. Sometimes it can get sketchy, especially with kids. If a child is on a bike with them, I almost come to a stop because who knows where they might go. Remember to say “thank you.”
