The Folding Bicycle’s Quiet Role in World War II

por Beau Grant en June 02, 2026

This Memorial Day weekend and D-Day Anniversary, we remember the men and women who served and sacrificed during times of war — including the everyday innovations that helped support them along the way.

During World War II, folding bicycles played a surprisingly important role for airborne troops and commandos. Lightweight, compact, and easy to transport, military folding bikes were used by paratroopers after landing behind enemy lines to help them move quickly and quietly across difficult terrain.

Unlike large military vehicles, bicycles required no fuel, made very little noise, and could help soldiers cover long distances faster than traveling on foot. British airborne forces famously used folding bicycles during operations like the Normandy landings and Operation Market Garden.

While modern military transportation has changed dramatically since the 1940s, the folding bicycle remains a symbol of practicality, efficiency, and mobility — values that still matter today.

At ZiZZO, we appreciate the history behind folding bikes and the role they have played over generations. We honor those who served and remember the sacrifices that made everyday freedoms possible.
